The Phase I project of Payra 2X660 MW Thermal Power Plant invested and constructed by China National Machinery IMP & EXP Corp entered commercial operation in Bangladesh

2021-01-14

The Phase I project of Payra 2X660 MW Thermal Power Plant invested and constructed by China National Machinery IMP & EXP Corp, a subsidiary of Genertec, recently gained commercial operation certificate from Bangladesh Power Development Board. The two units of the Payala Phase I project were approved to officially enter the commercial operation stage from December 8, 2020.

Prior to this, the unit 1 of the first phase of the Payara project invested and constructed by China National Machinery IMP & EXP Corp, began to operate on May 15, 2020.

Gaining this certificate is an important milestone for the first phase of the Payara project, marking a successful completion of the construction task of China National Machinery IMP & EXP Corp’s first ‘integration of investment, construction and operation’ project in overseas market.

The Phase I project of Payra 2X660 MW Thermal Power Plant was jointed developed, invested, constructed and operated by China National Machinery IMP & EXP Corp and Bangladesh’s Northwest Electric Power Company. It is the biggest power project in Bangladesh so far with the largest installed capacity. It is also a key project for Chinese companies to support the growth of the Belt and Road Initiative and the development of the Bangladesh-China-India-Myanmar Economic Corridor. The Payra Phase I project has a total installed capacity of 1,320MW and an operating period of 25 years. The average annual on-grid power generation capacity will reach 8.5 billion kWh, accounting for 10 percent of Bangladesh’s total power generation amount.

In 2020, in the face of the severe threat of the COVID-19 pandemic, China National Machinery IMP & EXP Corp deployed more resources and heavily focused on the epidemic prevention and control on the project site, while keeping the project running in an adequate pace. The first phase of the project entered commercial operation ahead of schedule, laying a solid foundation for the company’s investment to be recovered on schedule. Up to now, the first phase of the Payra project has generated a total of 3.09 billion kWh of electricity.

After the two units of the Phase I project officially entered commercial operation in Payra, it will greatly alleviate the pressure of power supply in the region, and build a better platform for local economic development and improving people’s living standards.
